History
We were established in 1989.
Our company started with a single-page ad in Popular Science magazine for 20lbs of sandpaper in the late 1980's.
In 1893, Klingspor Abrasives started manufacturing sandpaper in Germany. In the 1970s, Christoph Klingspor came to the then furniture capital of the world, Hickory, NC, and established a North American manufacturing facility. This facility produces sheets, discs, belts, and rolls of sandpaper. This industrial-grade sandpaper produces off-cuts and scraps in the manufacturing process. Instead of throwing the sandpaper away and adding it to the landfill, an idea (revolutionary at the time) to recycle the off-cuts was introduced to offer sandpaper by the pound. "The Bargain Box" was introduced through a single-page ad in Popular Science. The Bargain Box was so well received that a retail store was opened in 1991. Since then, Klingspor's Woodworking Shop has opened four stores across North Carolina. We offer a full-line mail catalog and an internet store. We carry over 40 vendors of woodworking and metalworking products. We still hold to our roots of the Bargain Box and have large bins in each store where you can buy Sandpaper By The Pound.
