Business Start-Up Basics

Updated: Dec 12, 2023

Getting started with turning a side-hustle into a fully functioning business is arguably the hardest part. Digging into this series from Christy with Steinman Accounting is going to help you be aware of things you need to consider when starting a business… or maybe even clue you in if you have started a business without realizing you did!

One of the first things you need to do when starting a business is to come up with a name! This is the fun part but you also need to be careful when selecting your business name. It helps to do a domain name search online to ensure the domain is available should you plan to get a website. Beyond choosing a name, one of the first things you need to do is get set up as a legal entity. Christy provides an overview of what steps to take if moving toward securing an LLC. Starting as a sole proprietorship is a couple fewer steps and would be something to consider as well.

Watch the video to learn more about how to properly pay yourself from a business checking account and why you should figure out a good bookkeeping system that works for you so as to avoid the feeling of overwhelm come tax season. Christy will also touch on being a small business owner and the potential need for business insurance. Comment below if there’s a particular topic you’d like to hear about in greater depth or via a live Q&A so you can ask direct questions to Christy herself!

Consider enrolling in TMCU for full access to all of the educational content and follow along with Christy on social media at Christy Steinman CPA for more tips and tricks on how to:

  • Differentiate between personal and business expenses

  • Prepare for tax season

  • Contact the appropriate governing body for information on sales tax in your state

  • Appropriately account for business use of your vehicle
